This Week at the Market
The College Hill Farm Market kicks off its outdoor season this week with a performance by the Aiken New Tech High School marching band. The band will be there for the opening of the market to carry in the banner and to play a few numbers. Be there at 3:00 so you don’t miss the chance to hear this talented group of young people!
This week market vendors will have artisan bread, baked goods, all-natural dog treats, and handmade soap. Back Acres Farm will be bringing local, seasonal produce like lettuce, kale, spinach, green onions, potatoes, onions, and carrots. They will also have their delicious eggs and chicken, pork, beef, and lamb raised on pasture without hormones or antibiotics. You can always check out the list of our 2017 vendors.
College Hill-based J&R Southern Grill barbecue will be joining us as a regular fixture at the market this year. Thursday they will be there serving up their delicious smoked meats with all the fixings so come hungry!
Caves and Clouds, in town for a few short days, will put on a special performance for the market’s opening day. This Brooklyn-based duo is currently touring their new album, “The Winter of Our Discontent”. E.W. Harris and Jo Kroger have teamed up to create a dreamy acoustic folk sound that can be heard at cavesandclouds.bandcamp.com. We are excited to welcome them to the College Hill Farm Market!
Product Spotlight: Spinach
Spinach grows best in cool weather, achieving maximum sweetness. In fact, many growers plant spinach in the fall and cover it over the winter, harvesting it through late winter and into the spring. It is a great vegetable to look for in the early farmers’ market season and again in the fall and winter. Spinach is a versatile green that can be eaten raw or cooked. It is an excellent source of many vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin K, manganese, and folate. You can find a delicious recipe for spinach salad with bacon dressing below (be sure to pick up some farm-fresh eggs to top your salad)! Find other recipes on our recipes page. Sweet, tender spinach won’t last long once the heat of the summer sets in so be sure to get it while it’s cool!
The outdoor College Hill Farm Market is open every Thursday from 3:00 to 6:30pm in the parking lot of the College Hill Presbyterian Church, 5742 Hamilton Ave starting THIS THURSDAY!. Most weeks feature music from 5-6:30 and some weeks feature kids’ activities and food demos.
The College Hill Farm Market accepts credit cards and EBT/SNAP. Those using EBT will receive up to $10 in matching tokens to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from participating markets. Stop by the market table for more information.
