Vendor Updates

We were happy to welcome back North Oaks Farm to the market last week with berries, jams, and plants. The berries and tomato plants sold out fast week so be sure to get to the market early if you’re after something special.

We were also excited to have another new vendor join us. Gaiser Bee Company offers honey and all kinds of honey products including candies, lip balm, and candles. Keep your eye out for other new vendors to join us as the weeks go on.

Bright Soapworks SoapDon’t forget to pick up some of Like Mom’s Only Vegan’s irresistible cookies, Aunt Flora’s buttery cobblers, Back Acres’ wide selection of produce, meat, and eggs, Mai Ro and Co’s healthy dog treats and accessories, J & R Southern Grill’s meat treats and amazing sides, Shadeau Bakery’s artisan bread and pastries, and Bright Soapworks’ handmade soaps (pictured above).

Dave Hawkins Performs

This week Dave Hawkins will perform from 5:00 to 6:30. Dave is a Nashville songwriter who makes his home in College Hill when not on the road. He plays the first Wednesday of each month at Marty’s Hops and Vines and also appears a few times a year at College Hill Coffee Co. He just released his 8th album last month.

Story Time Next Week

Next week (June 15th), Amanda, the children’s librarian from the College Hill Branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, will join us for a special children’s story time. Kids can gather under the shade of the tree near the market table from 3:30-4:30 to share songs, stories, bubbles, and more. This activity will be most appropriate for infants through 2nd graders. Mark your calendars!

Product Spotlight: Cucumbers

Cucumbers are related to squashes, pumpkins, and melons. They have a high water content so are naturally hydrating to our bodies during the heat of the summer. They are also a source of vitamin K and molybdenum as well as various phytonutrients like lignans. The refrigerator pickle recipe below is quick, easy, and sweet. (If you spill any of the pickling mixture on the countertop use rubbing alcohol to remove the turmeric stains.) The tzatziki, or cucumber yogurt sauce, is excellent with pita or pita chips, on vegetables, on a sandwich, etc. The Kimchi noodle salad includes a few more ingredients (including some Korean ones that may warrant a trip to CAM or Jungle Jim’s) and takes a bit more time, but also uses other produce you may be seeing at the market, like radishes and green onions. It is fresh and delicious (and spicy!).
