Story Time at the Market
This Thursday, Ms. Amanda, the children’s librarian from the College Hill Branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, will join us for a special children’s story time. Kids can gather under the shade of the tree near the market table from 3:30-4:30 to share songs, stories, bubbles, and more. This activity will be most appropriate for infants through 2nd graders.
We are happy to welcome Sunflower this week. She will share her beautiful native flute music with marketgoers from 5:00 to 6:30.
We are seeing more and more seasonal fruits and veggies available at the market. Last week, we saw the first tomatoes and new potatoes plus broccoli, cabbage, beets, cucumbers, snap peas, and zucchini. And there was still lots of gorgeous kale, lettuce, spinach, and green onions. North Oaks Farm, Seeders and Feeders, and Back Acres Farm are your destinations for the bounty of the season.

Product Spotlight: Green Onions
The names green onions and scallions are often used interchangeably and indeed the two crops can typically be used interchangeably. Green onions refers to immature Allium cepa, which, if allowed to mature, will form the familiar bulb onions. Scallions refers to Allium fistulosum, which are closely related, but which will not form bulbs. Since bulb onions aren’t available yet, green onions are a great seasonal way to incorporate the flavor of onions into food. The white part has the most intense onion-y flavor. The green leafy part is also edible, but is discarded for certain recipes. Larger green onions are great grilled if you want to make a standalone side dish out of them. The flavor mellows and the texture becomes almost velvety. Check out a recipe below.
You can pickle all kinds of seasonal veggies (and fruits!) to extend their life and make a tasty snack or condiment. Beets, zucchini, radishes, and jalapeños are all candidates for the brine treatment. Refrigerator pickles like the pickled green onions below aren’t shelf-stable, but they’ll last for weeks or sometimes much longer in the fridge. There are lots of ways to make a tasty pickling liquid with different amounts of vinegar, sugar, salt, and seasonings. Try out the one below and use your pickled green onions in a grain bowl, on a salad, or as a snack.
The outdoor College Hill Farm Market is open every Thursday from 3:00 to 6:30pm in the parking lot of the College Hill Presbyterian Church, 5742 Hamilton Ave from May 18th to October 12th. Most weeks feature music from 5-6:30 and some weeks feature kids’ activities and food demos.
