Get Ready for the 4th of July! + MayaLou Banatwala Performs at the June 29th Market

Blueberries

Get Ready for the 4th of July!

This is the last market before the holiday so be sure to pick up meats to grill from Back Acres Farm. Also be sure not to miss the blueberries from North Oaks Farm or the baking apples from Seeders and Feeders if you plan on making a patriotic dessert. Or, if you prefer to focus on the meal, pick up cobblers from Aunt Flora’s or cookies from Like Mom’s Only Vegan. No one will be disappointed. Seeders and Feeders, Back Acres, and North Oaks all have veggies to complement your holiday grilling (or to be the centerpiece). And how about some simple, summery grilled bread with honey and ricotta as a snack before your big meal? You can find honey from Gaiser Bee Company or from Mt Healthy Honey (sold at Shadeau).

Be sure to pick up soap from Bright Soapworks, dog treats and accessories from Mai Ro and Co, and smoked and grilled meats and sides to enjoy at the market (or to-go) from J&R Southern Grill.

Summer Squash and Zucchini

Product Spotlight: Zucchini/Summer Squash

Summer squash and zucchini are different varieties of the same species, Cucurbita pepo, and can be used completely interchangeably. They have a high water content, so some of the recipes below call for squeezing out the excess water before baking with them to avoid making the dish too soggy. Summer squashes are a source of carotenoids, vitamin C, and manganese, among other nutrients. They may also help regulate blood sugar. The recipes below will make you wish summer squash season never ends! One, squash pizza crust, can be made with any number of veggies, including kohlrabi and daikon radishes.

You can grate and freeze your summer squash and zucchini to extend the season. The frozen squash is great for baking sweet squash muffins or zucchini breads or for many savory dishes. Note that freezing and thawing will cause it to release water and soften.
