The progression of summer fruits at the College Hill Farm Market continues! If you arrive early enough you may be able to snag some peaches from Seeders and Feeders; they had the first of the season last Thursday. They also have awesome baking apples and gorgeous heads of garlic. Visit North Oaks Farm for carrots, beets, peppers, and jams, and visit Back Acres Farm for tomatoes, squash, onions, kale, and so much more.
Have you tried Shadeau‘s pastries yet? Aunt Flora’s Cobblers? Gaiser Bee Company has local honey and honey treats, Like Mom’s Only Vegan has cookies (they sell out of some varieties!), and Bright Soapworks has an impressive array of handmade soaps. J&R Southern Grill is busy cooking for you so you don’t get too hungry while you’re shopping and enjoying the market.
Perform at the Market
We are still looking for a few more performers to share their talents at the market this year. Do you have a band? Sing? Play an instrument? Something else? All styles are welcome! Email CollegeHillFarmMarket@gmail.com for more information.
Product Spotlight: Beets
These colorful root veggies enjoy a long growing season and are a source of phytonutrients, folate, and manganese. The greens are also edible, of course, and can be used in the same way as spinach or Swiss chard (they’re all relatives). Did you know you can bake sweets with beets? Their flavor pairs well with chocolate. The purple velvet torte recipe below is gluten- and grain-free and can be easily be made paleo with sweetener and fat substitutions. The other recipe below, for roasted beets with curry sauce, couldn’t be simpler. The sauce has intense flavor and a little lingering bite from the lemon juice (which you could mellow with more oil or sour cream if you wanted) that pairs so wonderfully with roasted beets. Madison also suggests pairing the sauce with asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, and grain-based salads.
