The last outdoor market of the 2017 season will be Thursday, October 5th (that’s next week!). Starting Thursday, October 12th the market will move indoors to the College Hill Coffee Co., at 6128 Hamilton Ave. The indoor market will run from 3:00 to 5:30pm every Thursday until the outdoor market starts again in 2018! Shop for fresh, local food all winter long. Back Acres Farm brings fresh produce, canned goods, meat, and eggs and Shadeau bread brings bread, pastries, and other goodies.
That means that these are your last two markets to pick up cobblers, coffees, sauces, and (if you’re lucky) vanilla cream pound cake from Aunt Flora’s and delicious cookies from Like Mom’s Only Vegan. You can find Like Mom’s at various indoor markets, like Northside (check out their website and facebook page for the latest updates). Aunt Flora’s is also making cobblers year ’round. Check out their facebook page for their locations.
Don’t forget that Back Acres Farm will be taking orders for fresh Thanksgiving turkeys at the market. Stop by their booth to find our more details and sign up for your bird!
Preston Charles Performs
We are thrilled to welcome Preston Charles back to the market this week. Preston is a proud father of three and a musician that has studied this field since the age of four. He started the violin with a private teacher, Gloria Wallace, who worked with him through high school and further developed under Ken Welsh at WHHS. Transitioning into composition, he found that folk, classical, and other lively forms of music were all in great compliment and just as important as the classics! You can find him on YouTube, at various places in the region, or check out his website MAKEITHAPPENMUSIC.COM, where you can book or support him in a variety of ways.
Product Spotlight: Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are delicious when they are peeled, cubed, tossed with a bit of oil and salt, and roasted. They are incredible when served with a sauce made of mayonnaise and ground dried tarragon. If you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary try making sweet potato pancakes – these are seasoned like pumpkin pie! The Caribbean-style cabbage coconut curry includes lots of sweet potatoes and makes a very satisfying meal. Finally, you can use sweet potatoes and/or butternut squash in the Moroccan-style stew, which features lots of seasonal produce.
The outdoor College Hill Farm Market is open every Thursday from 3:00 to 6:30pm in the parking lot of the College Hill Presbyterian Church, 5742 Hamilton Ave from May 18th to October 5th. Most weeks feature music from 5-6:30 and some weeks feature kids’ activities.
The College Hill Farm Market accepts credit cards, EBT/SNAP, and WIC FMNP coupons. Those using EBT will receive up to $10 in matching Produce Perks tokens to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from participating markets. Stop by the market table for more information.
