This Thursday, October 5th, is the LAST outdoor College Hill Farm Market of 2017. Starting Thursday, October 12th, the market will be indoors at College Hill Coffee Company. Jim and Patty from Back Acres Farm will bring all their wonderful produce, canned goods, meat, and eggs and Gary will bring glorious Shadeau bread and pastries. They’ll be there every Thursday from 3:00 to 5:30 all winter long until the outdoor market starts again in the spring.
A big thank you to every single person who helped make the market possible, in particular the staff and volunteers of College Hill Presbyterian Church who so graciously host the market. Thank you to every market shopper and every market vendor, without whom the market would not exist!
This week be sure to stop by to pick up cookies from Like Mom’s Only Vegan, cobblers, coffees, and sauces from Aunt Flora’s, veggies, eggs, and meat from Back Acres Farm (have you ordered your Thanksgiving turkey?), and bread, pastries, and apples from Shadeau.
MayaLou Banatwala Performs
We are excited to welcome MayaLou Banatwala to the market this week! She plays sweet, soulful sounds on the ukulele and is also the lead singer of the rock/soul/blues band Heavy Hinges.
Product Spotlight: Bread
Do you ever end up with too much bread in the house? Or lots of ends of loaves that don’t work for sandwiches? You can stick it in the freezer to keep it from going bad, but when it’s time to clean house try using your leftover bread to make bread pudding, Smitten Kitchen’s cinnamon toast french toast (you bake it like a bread pudding instead of frying individual slices!), panzanella (bread salad), or bread crumbs. To make dry bread crumbs tear or chop up the bread, spread it out on a baking sheet, and bake at 250-300F until dry. You can even turn the oven off and leave the bread inside to dry out further. Run it through a blender or food processor or place it in a zipper-top bag and smash with a rolling pin. To make fresh breadcrumbs, like those used in this Kale Caesar Salad or this Summer Squash Au Gratin with Salsa Verde simply tear or chop up your bread and run it through a food processor. Both dry and fresh breadcrumbs store great in the freezer, too. Don’t forget that you can find every recipe we’ve posted this season listed alphabetically on the recipes page of this website.
The outdoor College Hill Farm Market is open every Thursday from 3:00 to 6:30pm in the parking lot of the College Hill Presbyterian Church, 5742 Hamilton Ave from May 18th to October 5th. Most weeks feature music from 5-6:30 and some weeks feature kids’ activities.
The College Hill Farm Market accepts credit cards, EBT/SNAP, and WIC FMNP coupons. Those using EBT will receive up to $10 in matching Produce Perks tokens to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from participating markets. Stop by the market table for more information.
